The proverbial first blog post. Hello world. Hola Mundo!
We’re Gary & Elizabeth, currently living in Austin, TX. We’re about to become expats living in Puerto Morelos, Quintana Roo, Mexico.
I’ve started this blog as a way to chronicle our journey from living what some call “the American dream” in Texas, to becoming expats living in Mexico.
A few years ago, we spent a month in Belize, on Ambergris Caye. I was on vacation for 2 weeks, and worked for 2 weeks. I work in software development, so I can pretty much do my job anywhere with an internet connection. At the end of that month, we raised the question: could we do this forever? Maybe!
We liked Ambergris, but we knew that we did not want to live there long term. So we began searching for the place where we felt we could live long term. We love Mexico – the people, the culture, the food, the architecture, the celebrations. We’ve traveled to many places throughout Mexico – Playa del Carmen, Acapulco, Isla Mujeres, Oaxaca, Merida, La Paz, Los Cabos (Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo), Sayulita, Puerto Vallarta, and a bunch of smaller towns along the way. None really felt right. Then, in 2015, we visited Puerto Morelos, and we finally felt like this was somewhere that we could live.
Puerto Morelos is a small fishing village. It’s midway between Cancun and Playa del Carmen, and only 20 minutes south of Cancun airport (being close to a major airport is important to us, as there’s still so much of the world we want to see). It’s a beach town, which is SUPER important, as the being on the ocean is good for my soul. It’s a walkable town, which we love. And everyone we’ve met there has been lovely. We’ve now been to Puerto Morelos 5 times, as we want to be sure we’re just not in a honeymoon/tourist bliss phase. We might still be, but we’re comfortable enough to take the leap. We’re slightly terrified, but also super excited.
We’re currently in the process of selling our house and almost all of our stuff, and next month we’ll be packing up the Jeep, along with our 2 dogs and 1 cat, and heading out for a new adventure south of the border.
In this blog, I hope to share our stories and adventures, as well as the things we’ve learned on our journey, which hopefully help others who are also considering shaking things up a bit in their lives.
